7 Shopify subscription apps compared, with examples

#CRM#guides

The cost of acquiring a new customer in Japanese ecommerce keeps rising. In that environment, the subscription model — where the relationship does not end with a single purchase — matters more than ever.

Subscriptions are a powerful strategy for building a stable revenue base and maximising lifetime value. This article is intended as a compass for merchants in Japan who want to start selling subscriptions on Shopify: how to choose the app that suits your stage of business and your products, and take a confident first step.

Four benefits of subscriptions on Shopify

Adding a subscription model to a Shopify store brings a number of concrete benefits. Here are the four that matter most, explained for anyone new to the idea.

1. Stable revenue and higher lifetime value

Subscriptions give you recurring revenue, which makes monthly sales far easier to forecast. Instead of reacting to short-term swings, you can plan the business with confidence.

Lifetime value per customer commonly reaches several times that of one-off purchases. As LTV rises, so does the amount you can afford to spend acquiring each new customer, which opens the door to more aggressive marketing.

2. A dramatically better repeat rate

In a typical ecommerce store, the share of first-time buyers who go on to buy a second time averages only 15–25%. In a subscription model, where continuation is the premise of the first purchase, that figure improves to over 40% on average.

In cosmetics and health foods — the heart of D2C in Japan — rates above 50% are realistic, and for everyday consumables above 60%. Marketing efficiency for new customer acquisition improves substantially, and growth accelerates with it.

3. Better demand forecasting and less inventory risk

A major advantage of subscriptions is knowing next month's shipment volume almost exactly in advance, which makes purchasing and production planning far easier.

That minimises both the storage cost of excess inventory and the lost sales of running out. For products with a shelf life or use-by date — food and cosmetics in particular — reducing waste feeds directly into margin.

4. An ongoing relationship with customers

Subscriptions do more than deliver a product regularly; they create a recurring touchpoint. Including a newsletter or a sample with each monthly shipment, or sending a subscriber-only newsletter, deepens the conversation.

That continuing relationship makes it natural to cross-sell related products and upsell to higher tiers, and it turns customers into genuine fans.

Seven Shopify subscription apps compared

Here are seven of the main subscription apps available in the Japanese market, with what each one is good at. Use it to find the one that fits your situation.

Kantan Subscription

shopify-subscribe-app-1

As the name (meaning "easy subscription") suggests, Kantan Subscription is a Japanese app built around ease of adoption and low cost. Its great attraction is a starter plan at $0 a month, so you begin paying nothing but the payment processing fee. For anyone trying subscriptions for the first time, starting small with no fixed-cost risk is genuinely reassuring.

Setup is entirely in Japanese, and on an Online Store 2.0 theme it is done by intuitive drag and drop, with no code editing — something merchants consistently praise. Functionally it focuses on single-product recurring orders; there is no box feature for combining several products.

All told, if you want to avoid the complexity and cost of a fully featured app from abroad and simply try recurring sales of a single product, it is the lowest-risk option available.

Mikawaya Subscription

shopify-subscribe-app-2

Mikawaya Subscription is a Japanese app strong on marketing, built on what its developer learned running its own D2C business. Its real value is that it is not merely a tool for creating orders. It includes features that feed directly into lifetime value: cancellation prevention, which offers a special coupon when a customer tries to cancel from their account page, and staged discounts, where the discount rate rises with the number of orders.

Setup is entirely in Japanese, with thorough support from Shopify partners in Japan. That support is exactly what merchants in Japan value most about it: they will engage on how you run the programme, not just on the features. For a serious D2C brand that cares about branding and a high-quality customer experience, it makes a dependable partner.

Teikikobai

shopify-subscribe-app-3

Teikikobai is a long-established Japanese app with a deep understanding of how recurring commerce works in Japan. Merchants routinely describe its features as covering exactly the details others miss: fixed delivery dates such as "delivered on the 25th of every month", and a proper membership tier system where benefits change with spend or order count, both as standard.

Its most unusual feature lets a customer give the product to a friend or family member instead of skipping the next delivery. That avoids a lost sale while creating an opening for a new customer. Setup is entirely in Japanese and its onboarding support, including online meetings, is well regarded, which makes it ideal for building a traditional Japanese recurring commerce model properly on Shopify.

GO SUB

shopify-subscribe-app-4

GO SUB is a cost-effective Japanese app built by a Shopify Plus Partner in Japan. It is the first subscription app based in the country to earn Built for Shopify accreditation. Its standout feature is 0% transaction fees from the $39-a-month plan upwards. Where most apps take a share of revenue, GO SUB runs on a fixed cost, so the more you sell the greater the advantage.

The starter plan has no fixed monthly fee at all, charging only a 2% transaction fee on orders GO SUB is involved in, which appeals to stores that want to try subscriptions but worry about cost. The feature set is comprehensive too: flexible discount rates and delivery cycles, and multi-currency support that makes cross-border selling straightforward.

Its prepaid billing feature is another strong point, applying a discount in exchange for taking several months' payment up front — better cash flow for you, less payment admin and a discount for the customer. Setup is entirely in Japanese, with thorough support. For a growing store turning over several hundred thousand yen a month, where transaction fees start to matter, it is an extremely cost-efficient option to consider before moving to a fully featured app from abroad.

BOLD Subscriptions App

BOLD Subscriptions is a well-known and highly capable Canadian app. Its real value comes not from using it alone but from the ecosystem around it — Bold Upsell, Bold Bundles and the rest. Those apps work together to automate upselling and cross-selling, designed to maximise order value and lifetime value.

There are caveats for the Japanese market, however. The admin is entirely in English, and localising what customers see requires editing your theme's code. It also does not support the fine-grained delivery date and time selection that is standard in Japan. Getting the most out of it therefore means having a developer in house or a reliable external partner — a choice for mid to large stores with technical resources.

Recharge

shopify-subscribe-app-6

Recharge is the most widely used Shopify subscription app in the world — the category king. Its enormous feature set and its extensibility through APIs are its greatest strengths, and it is used by many well-known brands operating at global scale. Using it in Japan, though, is demanding. It costs $99 a month plus a transaction fee of 1.25% of revenue and 19 cents, which is expensive. The admin and support are entirely in English, so running it requires both language and technical ability.

It also does not support convenience store payment, and complying with Japan's revised Act on Specified Commercial Transactions requires careful attention to how information is displayed. Extracting 100% of its capability means investing not only the monthly fee but the invisible cost of development and operations to localise it and fit it to Japanese commercial practice.

Shopify Subscriptions

shopify-subscribe-app-7

Shopify Subscriptions is Shopify's own app, and it is completely free — no monthly fee and no additional payment processing charge. For anyone who wants to try the subscription model without spending anything, there is no better first step.

It is very easy to adopt, configured entirely within the Shopify admin. In exchange, the functionality is very simple: it cannot do the delivery date and time selection that serious recurring commerce in Japan expects, nor complex discounts such as a first-order-only rate. It supports little beyond credit card payment, which may limit who can buy from you.

That absence of cost is a direct trade-off against the quality of the customer experience Japanese customers expect: delivery scheduling and flexible discounts. Meeting the disclosure requirements of Japan's revised Act on Specified Commercial Transactions on the standard checkout also takes some ingenuity, so approach the regulatory side carefully.

Summary

Seven apps in, it should be clear that no single app is perfect for every business. The right choice depends heavily on your stage (just starting, or scaling), the nature of your products, your budget and your technical knowledge.

A small store that wants to start with minimal risk should begin with Shopify's own app or a low-cost Japanese one. Once you reach the stage of marketing seriously and maximising lifetime value, step up to a more capable Japanese app. Being willing to revisit the choice as the business grows is what matters. We hope this article helps your store grow steadily.
